Martha Pope Gorris
Martha started on her art journey as a writer. She has a B. A. from George Mason University in Creative Writing and has many articles and stories published as well as three novels and two nonfiction books “out there” (and many in the drawer still, she will tell you). For years she acted as a critique group leader and a San Diego Christian Writers’ Guild Board Member. An unexpected illness made her unable to work, and slowly her passion for writing shifted to painting.
For over 25 years, she participated in a weekly watercolor class, and became a member of the San Diego Watercolor Society. Over time, her desire leaned toward brighter, bolder colors, and a more abstract style. She tried acrylic pour painting and loved it. Her interests expanded to mixed media, even using twigs, leaves and various elements of nature in her work. Collage has caught her attention and she admits she wants to try it all.
Off Track Gallery in Encinitas, California is her artistic home, as well as the San Diego Watercolor Society. Most recently, she participated in the 2024 Mother's Day weekend Art, Garden and Studio Tour on May 11 and 12. This event donates 10% of proceeds to college students, and is an annual event featuring at least eight beautiful homes and gardens that participants can visit.
If you ask her, she will say she loves every form of art, and she believes that creativity is in all of us. What is different and wonderful is how we express it.
